Morellino and the Maremma
Discover the Maremma, one of the wildest and most beautiful regions of Tuscany, with olive tree covered hills, Mediterranean maquis (evergreen), and valleys where horses and wild boar roam freely. Its most famous wine, the Morellino di Scansano, captures the colors, flavors, and imagination of the area. This day trip south of Florence will open the doors of this special piece of Tuscany to you!
In the morning, your English speaking driver will pick you up at your location in Florence. After a beautiful car ride south and into the Tuscan countryside, you\'ll reach the Maremma.
Your first stop will be the winery Le Pupille, where Elisabetta Gepetti has been producing outstanding wine since the early 1980s. Beautifully located in the province of Grosseto, near the Tyrrhenian Sea, Le Pupille\'s wines of course include the famous Morellino di Scansano. In 2006, Elisabetta Gepetti was the first woman ever to be named “Winemaker of the Year,” an honor bestowed by the wine magazine Der Feinschmecker/Wine Gourmet. Enjoy a guided tour of Le Pupille, and taste their rightfully well-loved wines.
Ready to discover one of the best preserved medieval villages in the Maremma? Montemerano is waiting for you! Take a journey back in time as you enjoy a guided tour of this hilltop gem with its ancient walls, double arched gate, and castle.
At this point, it will be time for your special lunch at the Enoteca Bacco e Cerere, located in the little town of Saturnia, not far from Montemerano. Sit back and enjoy the friendly atmosphere and traditional Tuscan cooking! Famous for its cascades of sulfurous waters, which gush into a series of natural pools and have attracted visitors since antiquity, Saturnia is as charming a setting as you could hope for. Discover this ancient hamlet after your lunch – your knowledgeable guide will show you around and make sure you don\'t miss anything.
Your final visit and tasting will be one of these two well known wineries:
The Castello di Montepò winery in Scansano, province of Grosseto. Here, the owner Jacopo Biondi Santo will welcome you into his impressive domain, where the fortifications of the medieval castle tower over the vineyards. Jacopo Biondi Santo is one of the descendants of the man who invented the Brunello di Montalcino, arguably the most prized Italian wine, and as such is dedicated to continuing the legacy of his ancestor here at Castello di Montepò creating famous wines – among them of course the Morellino di Scansano.
Alternately, your day may conclude with a visit to the Val delle Rose winery in Poggio la Mozza near Grosseto, where the Cecchi family is passionately engaged in producing much praised wines. Their production includes a white Vermentino and, of course, the Morellino di Scansano D.O.C.G., and the Morellino di Scansano Riserva D.O.C. The Cecchi family is eager to show you the Val delle Rose vineyards and cellar, and invite you to taste their much praised wines.
Your “designated driver” will take you safely back to Florence for a return at approximately 7pm. Relax, and enjoy the drive back through the Tuscan countryside.
